Resurrection of the Soul

We often talk about the resurrection of the body, but before the body can be resurrected, the soul must go through a resurrection process. The first step is understanding the resurrection of the soul, and  how we’re supposed to walk through that process so that we can be a part of it. We need to understand our purpose, because if we don’t, we can never attain the promise God has for us and instead we’ll just wander aimlessly.

The Lord does not need us to worship Him, nor does He need our obedience or our offerings because He is perfect. So, why does he want us to serve Him? The early church teaches that the reason God wants us to serve Him is so that we learn to become like Him. Through serving the Lord, He imparts the benefits of His nature into us, so really we are the ones who benefit from serving God. God created us as containers in which to impart His glory. We become prepared for His glory by serving Him and through the preparation of our souls. He desires us to have clean hands and a pure heart (Ps. 24:3-4). The heart speaks of our conscience, which are our passions and desires; the clean hands are good works.

We will be judged on the condition of our soul at the end of the age. Every one of our souls is going to spend eternity somewhere, depending on what condition it’s in. If you want to inspect your soul all you have to do is take a look at your actions, your thoughts, and the way you talk. That tells you where your soul is at and where you need to place your focus. Our actions and thoughts are influenced by the teachings we feed our soul.

The reason Christ died on the cross and resurrected was to give us a hope to be partakers of the resurrection. But there are those who do not believe in a second coming of Christ, which means they don’t believe in the resurrection. The resurrection will occur when Christ returns, but there is no part in the resurrection for those who don’t believe. Scripture tells us Jesus is the firstfruits of many brethren, and the firstfruits is the resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20-23). Paul says at the Lord’s return he is looking for those who are Christ’s. The Lord is coming back to look for those who have become like Him. The whole point of getting revelation is to become like Him, which is the final goal and destination.

This end will take place once the last enemy is destroyed. The Word says that when Christ went on the cross and was resurrected, he took death captive (Eph. 4). So, what or who is the last enemy that the Lord is at war with that hasn’t come under His feet? He is at war with the carnal mind. The Lord is not at war with Satan. In the book of Job, Satan comes into the throne room to give an account of what he is doing. Satan answers to God. God is waiting for us to surrender our carnal way of thinking to Him. Paul says that the carnal mind is not able to understand the deep things of God (Rom. 8:7), which are the mysteries of the kingdom.

The final consummation will happen at the sound of the last trumpet. Revelation 10:7 says that as the seventh trumpet is about to sound the mystery of God will be finished as declared by His servants the prophets. Paul says that at the sound of the last trumpet we will be transformed in a moment of a twinkling of an eye (1 Cor. 15:52). Malachi says that the Lord whom you seek will suddenly enter His temple. In Hebrew “moment” is translated as “a twinkling of an eye.” The last trumpet is not a time when the church flies away - it is when the remnant is transformed in the glorified image of God.

The early church taught that Elijah would come before the second coming to prepare the church so that their souls would be capable of receiving the glory of God. Only those who are prepared beforehand will be partakers of the glory of God. The early church taught how we would attain becoming deified. Jesus himself said, “Does not your own law say that you are gods? (John 10:34).” We were created to be something more, something greater than to live a mundane, earthly life. The goal and purpose of a Christian is to become like God. That is why Jesus said to be perfect just as our Father in heaven is perfect. Our prayer life should be focused on how we can become deified. That is our destiny and our purpose. Amen.

Sincerely,

Apostle Michael Petro
